Introduction

Apache ActiveMQ Classic is an open-source, multi-protocol, Java-based messaging server that supports asynchronous communication between distributed applications. It implements the Java Message Service (JMS) API and offers features such as clustering, persistence, and high availability. ActiveMQ Classic is designed for reliable, scalable messaging in enterprise environments.

Apache ActiveMQ Classic is distributed under the Apache License, Version 2.0, a permissive open-source license that allows broad usage, including commercial applications. This license promotes compatibility and flexibility for developers and businesses.

Getting started

  1. Launch the product via 1-Click
  2. Use a web browser to access the management console at http://[ec2-ip]:8161/admin, where [ec2-ip] is the public ip provided by Amazon for your instance.
  3. Log in using the following credentials:
    • Username: admin
    • Password: The instance_id of the EC2 instance

You can also access your EC2 instance via SSH using the username and your Amazon private key.

The username depends on the operative system:

  • Amazon Linux: 'ec2-user'
  • Ubuntu: 'ubuntu'
  • Rocky Linux: 'rocky'
  • AlmaLinux: 'ec2-user'
  • CentOS Stream: 'ec2-user'

Installation details

To change the default username and password, edit the $ACTIVEMQ_HOME/conf/jetty-realm.properties file.

ActiveMQ server is installed in /opt/java/apache-activemq-[version] directory, which is linked to /opt/java/apache-activemq.

Server service is configured with systemd.

View status server:

[centos@ip-172-31-9-232 etc]$ sudo systemctl status activemq

Stop server:

[centos@ip-172-31-9-232 etc]$ sudo systemctl stop activemq

Start server:

[centos@ip-172-31-9-232 etc]$ sudo systemctl start activemq

All the information is saved in the folder is /var/lib/[name-of-your-broker]

Encryption configuration

There is no encrypted data.

Changing system credentials

To change the ActiveMQ credentials you have to modify the file "/opt/java/activemq/conf/jetty.xml"

You can use the ActiveMQ management console to view all necessary data.

How to assess and monitor the health and proper function of the application.

  1. Navigate to your Amazon EC2 console and verify that you're in the correct region.
  2. Choose Instance and select your launched instance.
  3. Select the server to display your metadata page and choose the Status checks tab at the bottom of the page to review if your status checks passed or failed.
